Sonora Governor Eduardo Bours Castelo assures Peñasco is here to stay as it undoubtedly has a tremendous future. With this in mind, he stated, he will continue to put his bets on this tourist destination.

Road to Pinacate Visitors Center approximately half-way complete

Intent to open center by May at the latest

Construction on the road leading to the new Pinacate Visitors Center, located around kilometer 73 on the Peñasco-Sonoyta highway, is approximately half-way complete, reports Federico Godínez Leal, Director of the Pinacate and Desert of Altar Reserve.
Godínez Leal noted that by the end of March, or early April, work on the road, which represents an investment of just over 4 million pesos and stretches over 8 kilometers, would wrap up. He added there are specifications in place to alter the ecosystem of the zone as little as possible during the project. Read more…

The Las Conchas Homeowners Association recently presented a one thousand dollar donation to municipal DIF President, Minerva Ramírez de Rentería, in support of the Puerto Peñasco children shelter.
On hand for the presentation were Jeannette and Rodger Clifton, alongside homeowner association representative Lori Ramírez.
Through this donation, the Las Conchas homeowners seek to motivate other city organizations in supporting the DIF children’s shelter, which fulfills an important mission in caring for abused and/or abandoned children. This donation will be used to help provide equipment for the shelter.

Annual Red Cross collection drive establishes $250,000 pesos as goal

With a goal to collect $250,000 pesos, the Directive Board of the Red Cross is preparing to launch the annual collection drive, set to run from March 17th through April 19th, reported Antonio Mendívil García, local Red Cross president.
Mendívil García noted the collection goal, established by the State Board of the Institution, is just above the $216,000 pesos collected last year, nearly 15% more, and represents approximately 6 to 7 pesos for each of the 40,000 residents estimated to live in Puerto Peñasco. Read more…

as had been announced, on Monday, March 2nd, the doors of the new Medical Family Unit number 9 (UMF 9) of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) opened up to the public, though with a list of minor details that are to be corrected in coming days.
Without a formal inauguration ceremony, the new clinic, which is not 100% complete, opened its doors at approximately 7:30 a.m. on opening day and began providing attention that is set to benefit the 24,000 Social Security holders in Puerto Peñasco. Read more…

Confirmation of withdrawal of boats from fleet

It is a fact that the 2009 program to withdrawal vessels from shrimping fleets is set to go into effect, which will undoubtedly include Puerto Peñasco, announced Ramón Corral Ãvila, director of the National Commission of Fishing and Aquaculture (Conapesca).

With an overwhelming advantage, Alfonso Elías Serrano obtained victory in this port during the internal election process to select a PRI candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial race. These results were similar to those from across the state of Sonora.
Upon the close of calculating ballots from the voting held March 8, which included the historic participation of 98% of members and went off practically without incident, it was reported that the senator obtained 6,178 votes, representing 60.3%, compared to 3,418 of his nearest competitor, Ernesto Gándara Camou, who obtained 33.4% of the vote. Project to broaden Peñasco-Caborca highway

While there are no investment plans in the short term to remodel the Peñasco-Caborca highway, there are projects to broaden the existing road so that it is more on par with the Coastal highway, reported Sonora Governor Eduardo Bours Castelo.
During an improvised press conference following a recent tour through the city, the Governor indicated there are plans to carry out work on the highway through private investment in addition to a mixture of public funds. Third Pinacate trek exceeds expectations

With participation expectations exceeded, and no serious incidents to report, the third annual trek entitled “The Steps of Kino in the Pinacate” was a hit and provided a concrete basis to provide continuity for these types of excursions, reported Amaranto Celaya Celaya, Municipal Chronicler.
Celaya noted that of the 85 people initially expected for the event, this number reached up to 106 in total. He added there were also at least 40 who were not able to register in days leading up to the event.
In addition to being encompassed in a surrounding of relaxation, culture and nature, there was a true family feel to the excursion, as 53% of the adventurers were women, 27% children and 20% men. Read more…

Assurance of 80% advance in regulating urban lands

5,559 property titles assigned

The process to regulate land ownership and designate property titles has advanced about 80% less than seven months from the conclusion of the current municipal administration, reported Municipal Trustee Francela López Castro.
López Castro stated in a recent press release that to date, they have assigned a total of 5,559 properties, principally to families of limited means.
The municipal official explained this number is in accordance to requests received since the beginning of the administration of Mayor Heriberto Rentería Sánchez, along with outstanding requests. Read more…

Guillermo Padrés wins overwhelmingly.

As had been expected, Guillermo Padrés Elías obtained an overwhelming victory during the municipal phase of the electoral process to select the PAN gubernatorial candidate.
During the process, 204 active PAN (National Action Party) members and supporters cast their vote.
The voting process took place recently from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in front of the PAN offices on Sinaloa Ave. and Blvd. Kino, with the participation of nearly 50% of all potential voters. In general, the process was held in a calm atmosphere and without confrontational incidents to report. Read more…
