Just three weeks prior to the change of the current administration, we sat down to interview outgoing municipal president Heriberto RenterÃa Sánchez to reflect upon his term. He once again kindly received us in his office, where he has served for the past three years, and from where he has directed and outlined the direction of Puerto Peñasco.
JoinUs: We will begin this interview by thanking you for the time you’ve provided us as you are in the transition process with the incoming administration; but tell us how does Heriberto RenterÃa feel at the conclusion of his administration?
Heriberto RenterÃa: Well, we believe we have fulfilled the responsibility we had; nevertheless, there was obviously still much more to do. I believe that tremendous steps were made and important things done for the development and future of Puerto Peñasco, which was the commitment we had when we took office.

Incumbent Mayor and Mayor elect hold first meeting

The first formal meeting between incumbent Mayor Heriberto RenterÃa Sánchez and mayor elect, Alejandro Zepeda Munro, was held on July 24th, officially marking the delivery-receipt process of the local administration.
At 11 a.m., in the Mayor’s chambers, the outgoing City Leader received the mayor-elect. The meeting took place in a cordial environment and with the overall objective of assuring a calm transition.
Within this framework, Alejandro Zepeda thanked Heriberto RenterÃa for the willingness to fulfill the procedure established by the law for the governmental transition. Read more…

A university village with the construction of its own buildings and infrastructure for institutions that make up the Tourism Academic Corridor, is a project that is currently being promoted, reported Enrique Carrión Contreras, Director of the Superior Technological Institute of Puerto Peñasco (ITSPP).
The ITSPP Director indicated that the university complex, now under consideration, will involve an investment of above 30 million pesos and will be located on the land of the ITSPP, where since September 2007 a Tourism Academic Corridor has operated. Read more…

Renders positive results Catches of 10-12 Tons on Average.

Catches averaging between 10 and 12 tons of scaled fish per trip are proving that the two month closed season, self-imposed by producers of this region, is a good alternative for aiding the restoration of these fish species, reported César Alejandro Villaescusa Fontes, Chief of the Federal Office of Fisheries.
Villaescusa Fontes explained that the yield of scaled fish increased substantially, especially among species including sole, guitar fish, manta and trigger fish.
He called attention to the fact that of the 59 ships with permission to harvest the scaled fish, nearly half did not fish in the months of May and June, to guarantee sustainability of the fishing industry. Read more…
Seismic Movement generates concern and surprise among members of Peñasco community.

Worry, surprise and even alarm were generated in this city by four tremors that registered the morning of August 3rd. The quakes impacted the whole coast of Sonora, though some citizens did not even feel them.
The seismic movements occurred between 10:55 and 11:33 A.M. and in Puerto Peñasco were most notable in the areas of hotels and tourist developments, due to the height of those buildings, according to a report from Municipal Civil Defense.
Official information indicates that the four earthquakes reached an intensity of between 5.0 and 6.9 on the Richter scale, as registered in the Gulf of California, across from the Sonoran coast. Read more…
Investment of half a million pesos.

AThrough an investment of just over half a million pesos, construction on the Children’s Multiple Use Center (CUMI) got underway in the children’s park popularly known as “El Cárcamo,” behind the offices of Public Services.
The work with the community, through the Sonoran Program of Social Participation (PASOS), allowed for the construction of the center, which will be finished within a period of two months. There, the young children of this part of the city, will be able to take courses, do activities, and participate in events, among other benefits.
With the presence of members from the civil groups 20 de noviembre and Rosa del Desierto, who promoted this project, the traditional flag-waving to launch the construction took place. A total of 573,000 pesos will be invested in the project. Read more…
Investments of more than 200 million pesos.

The first three phases of the comprehensive potable water supply program for Puerto Peñasco will be fully completed, representing an investment of nearly 200 million pesos, guaranteeing supply for at least four or five years, reported Municipal President Heriberto RenterÃa Sánchez.
RenterÃa Sánchez indicated that the third phase, which includes crossing the city with 30 inch pipes and the construction of a 6,000 cubic meter storage tank, which is a prototype on a national level because it is made with cutting edge materials and technology.
He remarked that this tremendous project included 78.5 kilometers of pipes for potable water built through an investment of nearly 23 million pesos in various neighborhoods of the city, principally in the regions of Nuevo Peñasco and San Rafael. Read more…
Trying to get around importing car

Two men lost in the Sierra Pinta desert and at risk of losing their lives were rescued around midday on June 19th, after they had tried to bring a foreign car into the country by going around the Almejas customs crossing.
Andrés Gómez Pérez, 36 years old, and Fernando Valdez Alcántar, 18, both originally from Alamos, Sonora, lived to tell their stories after lasting nearly 19 hours lost in the desert region.
Official information indicates that around 9 a.m. on July 19th a report came into the C-4 066 emergency number, requesting help for two people who were lost in the area of Sierra Pinta. Read more…

All of the projects begun by the present administration will be concluded on September 15th at the latest, leaving numerous projects ready for follow through that total more than 100 million pesos, reported incumbent Mayor Heriberto RenterÃa Sánchez.

Producers present 67 million peso budget.
The budget cut that has affected the three levels of government may possibly negatively influence projects of the productive assets program, which supports producers from the primary sector, reported César Alejandro Villaescusa Fontes, director of the Federal Fishing Office.
Villaescusa Fontes stated that this program operates with resources provided by the Federation and the State, therefore there exists the possibility there will be no approval this year for any of the proposals made by the fishermen of Puerto Peñasco.
He remarked that in the specific case of this port, the producers presented 73 projects, totaling an estimated investment amount of 67 million pesos. Read more…
Two Most Problematic Months for this Zone Ahead.

The Port Captain recently issued a warning to all mariners, those on the high seas as well as along the coast, that hurricanes may yet be expected given that the critical time has still not arrived for this phenomenon in this part of the Upper Gulf of California.
Guadalupe Javier Rivera Barrera, head of the office of the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation, said the months of September, October and into November are the most problematic concerning hurricanes for this zone of the Pacific Ocean. Read more…
Three local vessels participate.

Only three local shrimp boats from Puerto Peñasco were taken into consideration for the program to withdraw the fleet, in order to reduce fishing impact in the Upper Gulf of California, reported César Alejandro Villaescusa Fontes, local head of the Federal Fishing Office.
Villaescusa Fontes indicated that the three vessels that qualified to leave fishing activities received the amount of 1.3 million pesos, in exchange for handing over their fishing permits and the dismantling of their boats in the shipyards.
He stressed that the producers had suggested the possibility of not destroying the boats in order to use them for purposes other than fishing, such as tourism. Francisco Gordiano assigned as interim director

In a surprising move, around noon on August 3rd, René Barranco Zárate presented his resignation as director of municipal Public Safety, a role which he had held since December 16, 2008.
The stepping down of the chief of police was confirmed by Municipal President Heriberto RenterÃa Sánchez, who also reported that the deputy director of the police, Francisco Gordiano Alvarado, would be filling in the position as interim director.
Barranco Zárate had been at the head of the Municipal Police for just about seven and a half months. His resignation marks the fourth change in command for this department during the three year period of the present administration. Read more…
Call for those with outstanding payments to fulfill tax obligations.

At least 25% of taxpayers, called upon to fulfill state tax obligations, particularly related to vehicle license plates, have not responded to calls to become current with their payments. Therefore, steps will be taken to begin seizure of assets to guarantee debts, warned SofÃa Borchardt Gutiérrez, head of the State Fiscal Agency.
Borchardt Gutiérrez stressed they will proceed to strengthen the areas of notification and collection, as they have surpassed the requirement and penalty phase held during May and June.
Now, she noted, what comes next is the administrative process to execute the seizure of assets to guarantee the indebted amounts, with a period of ten days to recuperate the asset and prevent adjudication of the same to the state government. Read more…
